Østmarka nature reserve contains 18 km2 of pristine and varied forest areas to the east of Oslo, Norway. Despite its proximity to highly populated urban areas, it has a remarkably remote feel to it. It was protected in 1990 after enthusiasts had been working towards this goal since the 1960s. The terrain is very rugged and adds to the true wilderness feeling.
